What’s the deal with celebrities? What is the point of them? They are just ordinary people who happen to do ordinary things that catch our eyes. For every “amazing” thing they can do there is someone who can probably do better but is never noticed. I bring this up because I have learned that a Christian cannot idolize any person for doing ordinary human things. Here’s why:
REASON ONE: If everything is possible with God then nothing is possible without Him. All our talents, abilities, good fortune… they all come from God. Shouldn’t God get the credit then?
REASON TWO: For every “amazing” celebrity there is at least one person behind them that helped them reach their “stardom.” What about the teachers that raised these people?
REASON THREE: God can and will empower you to complete His will. God can give you any ability He wants and can make you into the person He wants.
See celebrities are just like you and me. They have the same thoughts, they have the same problems, they have the same unhappiness. I’ve made it a point in my life to realize I can and will meet with anyone I feel led to meet with.. no one is too famous or too busy. After all, if we are on the same level then it wouldn’t be any different than meeting up with your friends. With that mentality I have already met a few pastors of big churches just to talk with them, I even saw Louie Giglio after a Passion conference and walked right up to him.
Even in the Christian life we make certain speakers or singers out to be “celebrities.” Many of you have heard the story of the song “Healer” and have been touched by the words of that song. Unfortunately a few days ago it was discovered that the guy who wrote that song faked having terminal cancer. He flat out faked it! My only guess is that he wanted to be famous. He wanted to be seen… after all he got a chance to perform live with Hillsong. But Mike is not a celebrity… he’s just like you and me. We all get greedy at some point, we all get selfish, and we all make mistakes. So don’t go condemning a guy who did the exact same thing you did when you cut someone off in traffic, ignored the homeless man on the street, or purposely ignored the call from a friend who needs help. Pray for Mike just as much as you pray for your own riddance of selfishness. Pray for the celebrities who have a hard time looking away from themselves in the mirror. We are all in the same boat… we all need love.
